BORDEAUX BLEND: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CABERNET FRANC, MERLOT, PETIT VERDOT AND MALBEC (only 100 allocations available)
Golfer Ernie Els and vintner Jean Engelbrecht have been friends from a young age. Their partnership matured in the form of Engelbrecht Els Vineyards in the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin Region. Established in 1999, the first fruit of this joint venture was the striking 2000 Ernie Els Bordeaux blend comprising Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It scored 93 points in Wine Spectator, the highest rating ever achieved by a South African wine in this authoritative publication.
Located high up on the northern slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, in the famous Golden Triangle area, the estate’s vineyards enjoy a Mediterranean climate with cool sea breezes. The small, state-of-the-art production cellar is the domain of one of South Africa’s most highly-acclaimed winemakers, Louis Strydom. He has been part of the team since inception, and is one of a handful of South African winemakers to be awarded five 5-star ratings in recent editions of the John Platter Wine Guide.
- 2002 – 5 Stars in John Platter Wine Guide
- 2003 – 92 Points in Wine Spectator (USA)
- 2003 – 95 Points in Wine Enthusiast (USA)

Kanonkop
PAUL SAUER
2005
CABERNET SAUVIGNON/MERLOT (only 200 allocations available)
This high-profile wine estate falls under the demarcated ward of Simonsberg, in the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin Region. A fourth generation family winery, Kanonkop’s first vines were planted in 1910. In more recent years, the incredible consistency of style and quality of its red wines has positioned the estate among the top international wine producers. Present owners Johann and Paul Krige, remain driven by a “single-minded focus on what we are good at and to drive this approach within what our God-given terroir allows us to do”.
Cellarmaster Abrie Beeslaar more than ably assists, creating an ever-growing list of award-winning wines. His results to date are arguably unrivalled within the South African context, with each vintage boasting an even more impressive tally of top star-ratings. Kanonkop’s 900-ton winery is steeped in traditional methods. In the case of the 2005 Kanonkop Paul Sauer, the grapes were meticulously sorted before fermentation. Following malolactic fermentation – 20% in oak and the balance in tank – the wine spent 25 months resting in new French oak barrels.
- 2002 – 5 Stars in UK Decanter Magazine
- 2002 – Top 100 in Wine Spectator
- 2003 – Gold medal at Basel Wine Fair in Switzerland
- 2003 – Double gold medal at Veritas Wine Awards
- 2004 – 4.5 Stars in John Platter Wine Guide
Rustenberg
PETER BARLOW
2005
CABERNET SAUVIGNON (only 200 allocations available)
Situated on the north-west slopes of Simonsberg, Rustenberg boasts a wine-growing history dating back to 1682. Today, it enjoys a proud reputation for the superb wines emerging from the cellar, vintage after vintage. In 2004, this grande dame of the Stellenbosch Winelands was awarded National Heritage status.
The gifted winemaker Adi Badenhorst joined Rustenberg in 1999 and his commitment and enthusiasm have contributed greatly to the superiority of its wines. “This is the best winemaking job in the world,” says Adi. It’s hard not to agree. At Rustenburg, an exciting range of slopes and aspects allows for site-specific plantings which in turn, enhance varietal characteristics. In the cellar, the emphasis is on creating wines with a unique personality – wines that clearly bear the Rustenberg stamp of origin. To this end, natural winemaking techniques such as the use of wild yeast, bacterial fermentation, and the minimal addition of preservatives are adhered to. What’s more, the grapes from low-yielding, mature pockets of vine are vinified separately; then blended for added complexity. “There is no formula,” says Badenhorst, “the blend depends on the vintage”.
- 2003 – Winemakers’ Choice Diamond Award (2005)
- 2003 – 4.5 Stars in 2006 John Platter Wine Guide
- 2003 – 93 Points allocated by Steve Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, online edition
- 2004 – 4.5 Stars in 2007 John Platter Wine Guide
